Zanskar River, Ladakh, India

“"The river talks under your boots — a crack, a boom, a long groan. You learn to listen the way our fathers did."”
Nine days walking on the frozen Zanskar river through a Himalayan canyon, sleeping in caves and villages with Zanskari porters — winter's only route in.
Before the road, this was how Zanskaris reached the outside world in winter: a thin sheet of ice inside a canyon of ochre walls. You walk 5–6 hours a day on translucent blue ice, breath freezing on your beard, sleeping in shallow riverside caves and stone villages. Zanskari porters (not pack animals — the ice is too fragile) pull your duffel on wooden sleds. You will meet monks at Lingshed monastery and share butter tea in kitchens blackened by centuries of dung fires. Real winter expedition — nights to −25°C.
