Imlil, Al Haouz, Morocco
“The most sacred meal of the year, at the table where it is cooked.”
Break the fast with an Amazigh family in Imlil — harira soup at sunset, mint tea by the fire, and stories in three languages until midnight.
Every night of Ramadan our door opens at sunset. This spring, three seats at the table are yours. 17:00 — Arrive at the village. Change into house shoes. Meet the grandmothers, who will feed you no matter what you say. 17:45 — Help set the low table. Learn to pour tea from a height (harder than it looks). 18:32 — Adhan. First a date, then water. Then harira, chebakia, msemmen with honey. Then, later, tagine. 20:00 — Mint tea by the wood stove. Someone will bring out an oud. 22:00 — Overnight stay in the family riad (single-family, private room). We host 3 travelers per night among ~22 family members. This is a spiritual month for us — modest dress, phones away during prayer.
