“The island empties toward the sea. You walk with us.”
Walk in white with our banjar from the village temple to Sanur beach for the pre-Nyepi purification — gamelan, offerings, and the sacred pratima carried to the ocean.
Three days before Nyepi, our whole banjar (village council) walks to the sea. It is the most beautiful morning of our year. 05:00 — Meet at the family compound. Coffee, breakfast. You are dressed in a white kebaya or udeng (we provide) and taught how to wear the sash. 06:30 — Procession begins. Two kilometers of villagers in white, gamelan orchestra, women balancing offerings on their heads. 08:00 — Arrive at the beach. The pratima (sacred effigies) are carried into the surf while the priest chants. 10:30 — Return to the compound for a shared meal of lawar, sate lilit, nasi kuning. 6 traveler seats among ~60 banjar members. Photography allowed during the walk, never during the ocean immersion.
